What is the Huchet current?

The courant d’Huchet is a coastal river in the Landes region of France, rising in the Etang de Léon and flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Along its 10-kilometer path, you can observe the preserved local flora and fauna of the Réserve du courant d’Huchet. The banks of this river are home to a wide variety of plants, some more exotic than others, such as the pink hibiscus.

A walk with family or friends in this natural site is also an opportunity to observe several animal species such as coypu, otters and a large number of bird species such as the egret, kingfisher, grey heron and many others.

The history of the Huchet current

It was in 1908 that the first groups of boatmen were formed and began to ply the river. Previously fishermen, their change of activity was prompted by a growing demand for visits to this remarkable area of the Côte d’Argent. The gradual popularity of this region is due in part to the poet and journalist Maurice Martin, who wanted to promote the Aquitaine coastline. For over 100 years, these boatmen have been bringing the history and special features of this waterway to life for their ever-growing number of visitors.
